Common Questions

DO I NEED AN ELECTRICIAN?

When it comes to electrical work it’s highly advisable to enlist the help of a qualified professional. Here are some tips to help you determine whether it’s time to pick up the phone and contact an electrician:

My Lights are flickering, should I be worried?

Flickering lights and/or electrical outlets which are hot to the touch can be caused by several reasons. Try turning off some of your appliances or changing lamps. If that doesn’t make a difference you could be looking at more serious wiring problems – pick up the phone and give us a call!

My appliance is sparking, what should I do?

Sparks or flames coming from appliances are never good! Immediately turn the offending appliance off and unplug it. If you smell something burning but can’t figure out where it’s coming from you know what to do – give us a call and we’ll be right there!

I’ve come across some live, exposed wires – what do I do?

If you accidentally expose live wires, or come across some exposed wires, you need to take immediate action, as this not only poses a fire risk, but also the threat of electrocution.   Get in touch with us.

Can I extend cables myself?

You can extend existing or add new cabling yourself if you are confident in your own abilities, but you cannot connect the cables to the main electricity supply. For this you’ll need to contact an electrician.

My Bathroom is flooded. Do I need to call an Electrician?

As soon as you notice any flooding in your home you should make sure all appliances and power sockets which are in danger of getting wet have been turned off. If water does get in to your power outlets you will need an electrician to come out and check for damage.

While hanging a picture I hit some wires. What should I do?

It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to electricity, so if you’ve got the sense that the nail you were vigorously hammering in to the wall has indeed struck an electric cable it’s best to get an electrician round to survey any possible damage.

I was digging a hole in the backyard and struck a cable. What should I do?

If you’re worried that live wires have been exposed make sure that the site is secure, either by alerting anyone who might go near it about the possible issue, or by covering the hole where the cable lies. Then call your electrician.

I’m building a new home. When should I call in an electrician?

You should choose an electrician as early as possible once you’ve decided to build. While an electrician plays a major role in the final days of your home’s construction, installing lighting, fitting switches, and getting the audio/visual equipment up and running, much of the ground work for these services has been done much earlier. From planning the positioning of your lights and power outlets to pre-wiring for data, security, audio and visual, there are many tasks an electrician performs which are far more expensive if done later in the process. There are also a number of areas that members of the public may not realise we play an important role in, including the installation of underfloor heating and hot water cylinders.
